Theory and practice of writing / William Grabe
Titre : Theory and practice of writing : an applied linguistic perspective / Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : William Grabe ; Robert B. Kaplan Editeur : London : Longman Année de publication : 1996 Importance : xvi, 487 p Format : 23 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-582-55383-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Theory writing text linguistic teaching . Index. décimale : 421 Résumé : This book undertakes a general framework within which to consider the complex nature of the writing task in English, both as a first, and as a second language. The volume explores varieties of writing, different purposes for learning to write extended text, and cross-cultural variation among second-language writers.
The volume overviews textlinguistic research, explores process approaches to writing, discusses writing for professional purposes, and contrastive rhetoric. It proposes a model for text construction as well as a framework for a more general theory of writing. Later chapters, organised around seventy-five themes for writing instruction are devoted to the teaching of writing at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Writing assessment and other means for responding to writing are also discussed.
William Grabe and Robert Kaplan summarise various theoretical strands that have been recently explored by applied linguists and other writing researchers, and draw these strands together into a coherent overview of the nature of written text. Finally they suggest methods for the teaching of writing consistent with the nature, processes and social context of writing.Theory and practice of writing : an applied linguistic perspective / [texte imprimé] / William Grabe ; Robert B. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-01222-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Binding theory structures domains prunouns Index. décimale : 421 Résumé : Binding theory seeks to explain how different kinds of nominal expressions such as names, noun phrases and pronouns have anaphoric relations amongst one another, and how they come to have reference to things in the world. This textbook provides a thorough and comprehensive introduction to modern binding theory. Starting at a very basic level, it introduces the reader to a huge variety of nominal and especially pronominal expressions from the world's languages, the ways they can be used, and current theorising about their grammatical properties and their interpretation. Daniel Büring discusses a wide range of cross-linguistic data and theoretical approaches, and unlike in existing introductions, pairs the discussion of syntactic facts with a detailed introduction to the semantic interpretation of binding structures. Written in a clear and accessible style, and with numerous exercises and examples, this textbook will be invaluable to graduate and advanced undergraduate students of syntax and semantics Binding theory [texte imprimé] / Buring,Daniel, Auteur . - [S.l.] : Cambridge : university press, 2005 . - 281 P. ; 24*17 cm.

Format : 22*14 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-870001-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : comparative theory language grammar morphology syntax culture society. Index. décimale : 421 Résumé : How and why are languages constantly changing? Historical lingustics seeks to find out by going beyond the history of individual languages to discover the general principles which underlie language change. But our evidence is severely limited. Most of the world's languages are still unwritten, and even in areas with long written traditions, such as Europe and the Near East, documentary evidence stretches only a little way back along the path of the historical development of languages. How, then, can we uncover our long linguistic prehistory, and what can it tell us about language change? This new textbook is an accessible general guide for students with an elementary knowledge of linguistics to the methods and theoretical bases of linguistic reconstruction, and of newer, less well established principles such as the application of linguistic universals and language typology, and quantitative techniques. Finally he reviews the principles for establishing language relationships and for uncovering information about the homelands and cultures of the prehistoric speakers of reconstructed languages. (XVI-399 p.) Présentation : ill. Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-582-32784-9 Note générale : Papers presented at the 2nd Cardiff Roundtable in Language and Communication, held June 1997, Cardiff University Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Language theory social discourse ideology Index. décimale : 421 Résumé : The empirical and descriptive strengths of sociolinguistics, developed over more than 40 years of research, have not been matched by an active engagement with theory. Yet, over this time, social theorising has taken important new turns, linked in many ways to linguistic and discursive concerns. Sociolinguistics and Social Theory is the first book to explore the interface between sociolinguistic analysis and modern social theory. The book sets out to reunite sociolinguistics with the concepts and perspectives of several of the most influential modern theorists of society and social action, including Bakhtin, Foucault, Habermas, Sacks, Goffman, Bourdieu and Giddens. In eleven newly commissioned chapters, leading sociolinguists reappraise the theoretical framing of their research, reaching out beyond conventional limits. The authors propose significant new orientations to key sociolinguistic themes, including-
- social motivations for language variation and change
- language, power and authority
- language and ageing
- language, race and class
- language planning
In substantial introductory and concluding chapters, the editors and invited discussants reassess the boundaries of sociolinguistic theory and the priorities of sociolinguistic methods. Sociolinguistics and Social Theory encourages students and researchers of sociolinguistics to be more reflexively aware and critical of the social bases of their analyses and invites a reasessment of the place sociolinguistics occupies in the social sciences generally.Sociolinguistics and social theory [texte imprimé] / Nikolas Coupland (1950-....), Editeur scientifique ; Srikant Sarangi, Editeur scientifique ; Christopher N.
