Titre : After Babel : Aspects of Language and Translation Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : George Steiner, Auteur Mention d'édition : Third edition Editeur : New York : Oxford University Press Année de publication : 1998 Importance : 538 P. Format : 20*13 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-288093-2 Langues : Français (fre) Mots-clés : Babel translation language word theory motion culture. Index. décimale : 422 Résumé : When it first appeared in 1975, After Babel created a sensation, quickly establishing itself as both a controversial and seminal study of literary theory. In the original edition, Steiner provided readers with the first systematic investigation since the eighteenth century of the phenomenology and processes of translation both inside and between languages. Taking issue with the principal emphasis of modern linguistics, he finds the root of the "Babel problem" in our deep instinct for privacy and territory, noting that every people has in its language a unique body of shared secrecy. With this provocative thesis he analyzes every aspect of translation from fundamental conditions of interpretation to the most intricate of linguistic constructions. For the long-awaited second edition, Steiner entirely revised the text, added new and expanded notes, and wrote a new preface setting the work in the present context of hermeneutics, poetics, and translation studies. This new edition brings the bibliography up to the present with substantially updated references, including much Russian and Eastern European material. Like the towering figures of Derrida, Lacan, and Foucault, Steiner's work is central to current literary thought. After Babel, Third Edition is essential reading for anyone hoping to understand the debates raging in the academy today. Titre : Descriptive translation studies--and beyond Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Gideon Toury Mention d'édition : 2nd expanded ed. Editeur : Amsterdam : John Benjamins Publishing.Company Année de publication : 2012 Importance : xv, 350 p. Format : 23*16 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-90-272-2448-4 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : descriptive translation studies beyond problem in translation studies pseudotranslations and their significance being a norm-governed activity studing translational norms Résumé : This is an expanded and slightly revised version of the book of the same title which caused quite a stir when it was first published (1995). It thus reflects an additional step in an ongoing research project which was launched in the 1970s. The main objective is to transcend the limitations of using descriptive methods as a mere ancillary tool and place a proper branch of DTS at the very heart of the discipline, between the theoretical and the applied branches.
Throughout the book, theoretical and methodological discussions are illustrated by an assortment of case studies, the emphasis being on the need to take whatever one wishes to focus on within the contexts which are relevant to it.
Part One discusses the pivotal position of the descriptive branch within Translation Studies, and Part Two then outlines a detailed rationale for that positioning. This, in turn, supplies a framework for the case studies comprising Part Three, where a number of exemplary issues are analysed and contextualized: texts and modes of translational behaviour are situated in their cultural setting, and textual components are related to their texts and then also to the cultural constellations in which they are embedded. All this leads to Part Four, which asks what the knowledge accumulated through descriptive studies of the kind advocated in the book is likely to yield in terms of both the theoretical and the applied branches of the field.
All in all: an innovative, thought-provoking book which no one with a keen interest in translation can afford to ignore.Descriptive translation studies--and beyond [texte imprimé] / Gideon Toury . - 2nd expanded ed. . - Amsterdam : John Benjamins Publishing.Company, 2012 . - xv, 350 p. ; 23*16 cm.
