Language and self-transformation / Peter G. Stromberg
Titre : Language and self-transformation : A study of the christian conversion narrative Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Peter G. Stromberg, Auteur Editeur : Cambridge : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 1993 Importance : 148 p Format : 23 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-03136-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Language Conversion narratives Evangelical christianity. Résumé : Social scientists have long been fascinated by the Christian conversion, a form of religious experience that believers say both strengthens their faith and changes their lives. This study looks at the performance of conversion narratives and argues that the performance itself is central to the efficacy of the conversion. Through detailed analysis of a number of conversion narratives, Peter Stromberg shows how these narratives can be understood as a form of ritual, in which believers invoke central emotional conflicts and then attempt to resolve these conflicts by reframing them in terms of the language of Evangelical Christianity. Although the Christian conversion narrative is used as the primary example, the approach in this book also illuminates other practices - such as psychotherapy - in which people deal with emotional conflict through language. Titre : Handbook of generative approaches to language acquisition Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jill de Villiers, Auteur Année de publication : 2011 Importance : (vii-403 p.) Présentation : ill. Format : 25 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-94-007-1687-2 Note générale : Handbook of Generative Approaches to Language Acquisition / edited by Jill de Villiers, Tom Roeper.. - Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Springer e-books, 2011. - (Studies in Theoretical Psycholinguistics). - ISBN 978-94-007-1688-9 Langues : Français (fre) Mots-clés : Language acquisition Generative grammar Language Acquisition. Résumé : Modern linguistic theory has been based on the promise of explaining how language acquisition can occur so rapidly with such subtlety, and with both surprising uniformity and diversity across languages. This handbook provides a summary and assessment of how far that promise has been fulfilled, exploring core concepts in acquisition theory, including notions of the initial state, parameters, triggering theory, the role of competition and frequency, and many others, across a variety of syntactic topics that have formed the central domains of investigation and debate. These topics are treated from the unique perspective of central actors in each domain who have helped shape the research agenda. The authors have presented a summary of the data, the theories under discussion, and their own best assessments of where each domain stands. Providing as well the agenda for future work in the field showing both particular needs and general directions that should be pursued in the coming decades. Note de contenu :
