These topics include immersions and imbeddings, approach techniques, and the Morse classification of surfaces and their cobordism. The author keeps the mathematical prerequisites to a minimum; this and the emphasis on the geometric and intuitive aspects of the subject make the book an excellent and useful introduction for the student. There are numerous excercises on many different levels ranging from practical applications of the theorems to significant further development of the theory and including some open research problems.

By viewing such surfaces as level sets of smooth functions, the author is able to introduce global ideas early without the need for preliminary chapters developing sophisticated machinery. the calculus of vector fields is used as the primary tool in developing the theory. Coordinate patches are introduced only after preliminary discussions of geodesics, parallel transport, curvature, and convexity. Differential forms are introduced only as needed for use in integration. The text, which draws significantly on students' prior knowledge of linear algebra, multivariate calculus, and differential equations, is designed for a one-semester course at the junior/senior level.

Its (soon to be published) companion volume, Operators on Hilbert Space, is in- tended to be used as a textbook for a subsequent course in operator theory. In writing these books we have naturally been concerned with the level of preparation of the potential reader, and, roughly speaking, we suppose him to be familiar with the approximate equivalent of a one-semester course in each of the following areas: linear algebra, general topology, complex analysis, and measure theory. Experience has taught us, however, that such a sequence of courses inevitably fails to treat certain topics that are important in the study of functional analysis and operator theory. For example, tensor products are frequently not discussed in a first course in linear algebra. Likewise for the topics of convergence of nets and the Baire category theorem in a course in topology, and the connections between measure and topology in a course in measure theory. For this reason we have chosen to devote the first ten chapters of this volume (entitled Part I) to topics of a preliminary nature. In other words, Part I summarizes in considerable detail what a student should (and eventually must) know in order to study functional analysis and operator theory successfully. index. SOMMAIRE:

This is essentially a book on linear algebra. But the approach is somewhat unusual in that we emphasise throughout the geometric aspect of the subject. The material is suitable for a course on linear algebra for mathe- matics majors at North American Universities in their junior or senior year and at British Universities in their second or third year. However, in view of the structure of undergraduate courses in the United States, it is very possible that, at many institutions, the text may be found more suitable at the beginning graduate level. The book has two aims: to provide a basic course in linear algebra up to, and including, modules over a principal ideal domain; and to explain in rigorous language the intuitively familiar concepts of euclidean, affine, and projective geometry and the relations between them. It is increasingly recognised that linear algebra should be approached from a geometric point of VIew. This applies not only to mathematics majors but also to mathematically-oriented natural scientists and engineers.
