Many advances have been made since the 2003edition of Earthquake Risk Reduction, and there is everysign that this rate of progress will continue apace in the years tocome. Compiled from the author s wide design and researchexperience in earthquake engineering and engineering seismology, this key text provides an excellent treatment of the complexmultidisciplinary process of earthquake resistant design and riskreduction.
New topics include the creation of low–damage structures and thespatial distribution of ground shaking near large fault ruptures.Sections on guidance for developing countries, response ofbuildings to differential settlement in liquefaction, performance–based and displacement–based design and thearchitectural aspects of earthquake resistant design are heavilyrevised.
This book:
Outlines individual national weaknesses that contribute toearthquake risk to people and property
Calculates the seismic response of soils and structures, usingthe structural continuum Subsoil Substructure Superstructure Non structure
Evaluates the effectiveness of given design and constructionprocedures for reducing casualties and financial losses
Provides guidance on the key issue of choice of structuralform
Presents earthquake resistant design methods for the main fourstructural materials steel, concrete, reinforced masonryand timber as well as for services equipment, plant andnon–structural architectural components
Contains a chapter devoted to problems involved in improving(retrofitting) the existing built environment
This book is an invaluable reference and guiding tool topractising civil and structural engineers and architects, researchers and postgraduate students in earthquake engineering andengineering seismology, local governments and risk managementofficials.
Biographie de l'auteur
David Dowrick graduated as a Civil Engineer fromAuckland University in 1958, and was awarded a Doctorate ofEngineering in 2003. He has worked both in consulting engineeringand in earthquake research, based in London and New Zealand. He nowworks part–time on earthquake research from his home in Tauranga, where he is also involved in four non–engineering committees.
Major engineering design projects include the Sydney Opera Houseroof, restoration of York Minster and the Ohaaki power stationcooling tower in New Zealand. In addition, he has advised the NewZealand Historic Places Trust on a variety of conservationprojects. Dr Dowrick is the author of over 70 publications, including four editions of books on earthquake engineering. He hasreceived five awards, four for earthquake engineering papers plusthe Institution of Civil Engineers Telford Gold Medal forhis paper on York Minster. He has been made a life member of the NZSociety for Earthquake Engineering.Note de contenu : Rev. ed. of: Earthquake risk reduction. 2003.

Description
Following the success of the first edition, this thoroughly updated second edition of Image Processing: The Fundamentals will ensure that it remains the ideal text for anyone seeking an introduction to the essential concepts of image processing. New material includes image processing and colour, sine and cosine transforms, Independent Component Analysis (ICA), phase congruency and the monogenic signal and several other new topics. These updates are combined with coverage of classic topics in image processing, such as orthogonal transforms and image enhancement, making this a truly comprehensive text on the subject.
Key features:
Presents material at two levels of difficulty: the main text addresses the fundamental concepts and presents a broad view of image processing, whilst more advanced material is interleaved in boxes throughout the text, providing further reference for those who wish to examine each technique in depth.
Contains a large number of fully worked out examples.
Focuses on an understanding of how image processing methods work in practice.
Illustrates complex algorithms on a step-by-step basis, and lists not only the good practices but also identifies the pitfalls in each case.
Uses a clear question and answer structure.
Includes a CD containing the MATLAB® code of the various examples and algorithms presented in the book. There is also an accompanying website with slides available for download for instructors as a teaching resource.
Image Processing: The Fundamentals, Second Edition is an ideal teaching resource for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. It will also be of value to researchers of various disciplines from medicine to mathematics with a professional interest in image processing

Redefines laser ionization's place in analytical chemistry along with the discovery of several new techniques and their promising applications including laser-solid interaction which is used in diamond synthesis, high temperature superconductor preparation, desorption of large biomolecules and sampling of solids for chemical analysis. Concentrates on the pulsed laser now viewed as a tool of depositing a tunable amount of energy into a chosen degree of material rather than as a fast local surface heating device.Note de contenu : References
