Résumé : In his reflections on Christianity, Saint Thomas Aquinas forged a unique synthesis of ancient philosophy and medieval theology. Preoccupied with the relationship between faith and reason, he was influenced both by Aristotle's rational world view and by the powerful belief that wisdom and truth can ultimately only be reached through divine revelation. Thomas's writings, which contain highly influential statements of fundamental Christian doctrine, as well as observations on topics as diverse as political science, anti-Semitism and heresy, demonstrate the great range of his intellect and place him firmly among the greatest medieval philosophers. Titre : Studies on Anglo-Saxon institutions Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : H. Munro Chadwick, Auteur Editeur : Cambridge : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2010 Importance : (xiii-422 p.) Format : 22 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-108-01005-4 Note générale : Fac-sim. de l'éd. de Cambridge : at the University press, 1905 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Anglo-Saxons (Germanic people) Money Great Britain Middle Ages Politics and government. Résumé : First published in 1905, H. Munro Chadwick's Studies on Anglo-Saxon Institutions applied his study of philology to a re-analysis of the historical evidence for early English law and administration. In the first part he examines the development of the monetary and social systems, coming to some controversial interpretations. The second part of the book looks at the administration at national and local levels, land tenure and the origin of the nobility. He shows that there was considerable variation between different Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and their legal and social organisation. Chadwick combined his knowledge of languages, history and archaeology to highlight new areas for further research, and he had considerable influence on the development of the study of Anglo-Saxon and related subjects at Cambridge.
