Eighteenth-century Britain / Nigel Yates
Titre : Eighteenth-century Britain : religion and politics, 1714-1815 Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Nigel Yates, Auteur Editeur : Harlow, ; New York : Pearson/Longman Année de publication : 2008 Importance : (IX-258 p.) Présentation : couv. ill. en coul. Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-4058-0161-4 Note générale : Bibliographie p. [232]-240. Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Great Britain Church history 18th century Politics and government. Résumé : The church of the eighteenth century was still reeling in the wake of the huge religious upheavals of the two previous centuries. Though this was a comparatively quiet period, this book shows that for the whole period, religion was a major factor in the lives of virtually everybody living in Britain and Ireland. Yates argues that the established churches, Anglican in England, Irelandand Wales, and Presbyterian in Scotland, were an integral part of the British constitution, an arrangement staunchly defended by churchmen and politicians alike.
The book also argues that, although there was a close relationship between church and state in this period, there was also limited recognition of other religions. This led to Britain becoming a diverse religious society much earlier than most other parts of Europe. During the same period competition between different religious groups encouraged ecclesiastical reforms throughout all the different churches in Britain.Eighteenth-century Britain : religion and politics, 1714-1815 [texte imprimé] / Nigel Yates, Auteur . - [S.l.] : Harlow, ; New York : Pearson/Longman, 2008 . - (IX-258 p.) : couv. ill. en coul. ; 24 cm.

Bibliogr. p. 150-152. Index
Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Great Britain Foreign relations Africa Foreign relations administration Politics and government. Résumé : Why has Africa become such an important priority for Britain's foreign policy under New Labour? What interests and values is the UK seeking to uphold by intervening? Why has aid to Africa more than tripled over the past decade? How has the UK's involvement in the War on Terror affected its efforts there?
In Britain in Africa Tom Porteous seeks to answer these and other questions about Britain's role in Africa since 1997. He provides an account of the key players, the policies they constructed in the shadow of the war in Iraq and the future of Britain's engagement with the continent. This book sets out the balance sheet of what Britain has achieved, and where and why it failed in Africa.
A compelling read, whose importance for international politics reaches far beyond Britain or Africa.Britain in Africa [texte imprimé] / Tom Porteous, Auteur . - [S.l.] : London ; New York : Zed Books, 2008 . - (IX-158 p.) : couv. ill. en coul ; 21 cm.

Titre : Britain since 1918 : the strange career of British democracy Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : David Marquand, Auteur Editeur : London : Weidenfeld / Nicolson Année de publication : 2008 Importance : (XV-477 p Présentation : jaquette ill. en coul Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-297-64320-3 Note générale : Réimpression : 2009 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Democracy Great Britain History 20th century Politics and government. Résumé : The history of democratic politics in Britain since the coming of universal male suffrage in 1918 is a dramatic one, crowded with events and colourful figures. As well as the great events of war and economic crises, and the quieter drama of constitutional change, this era has been studded with democratic protests of every sort.
The story opens more than 350 years ago. The Levellers of the 17th century, 18th-century radicals, the Chartists and the Reform Acts are all part of the unsteady and fiercely contested progress towards a democratic constitution. Dreams, visions and ideals are important too - of George Orwell, and Enoch Powell, Milton, Thomas Paine and Edmund Burke, Churchill and Lord Salisbury, Aneurin Bevan and Tony Benn - for they have also shaped our outlook.

Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Power (Social sciences) Great Britain Power (social science) Politics and government. Résumé : On 13 September 2007, Robert Peston broke the news that Northern Rock had become a victim of the global credit crunch and was seeking an emergency loan from the Bank of England. It was the latest in a long line of scoops by this award-winning journalist. Over the weeks that followed, the Government found itself exposed to the Rock to the tune of 57 billion or almost 2000 for every taxpayer.
As Robert Peston shows in his fascinating new book, the seeds for the collapse of Northern Rock and the upheavals in the financial markets were sown years before. WHO RUNS BRITAIN? is the first time anyone has drawn all the threads together to weave a story thats rich in extraordinary characters and outrageous feats of economic bravado.
This book is about the widening gap between the super-rich and the rest of us. It explores and explodes the myth that the financial creativity of those who are amassing these vast fortunes is good for the wider economy and for all of us.
