Handbook of generative approaches to language acquisition / Jill de Villiers
Titre : Handbook of generative approaches to language acquisition Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jill de Villiers, Auteur Année de publication : 2011 Importance : (vii-403 p.) Présentation : ill. Format : 25 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-94-007-1687-2 Note générale : Handbook of Generative Approaches to Language Acquisition / edited by Jill de Villiers, Tom Roeper.. - Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Springer e-books, 2011. - (Studies in Theoretical Psycholinguistics). - ISBN 978-94-007-1688-9 Langues : Français (fre) Mots-clés : Language acquisition Generative grammar Language Acquisition. Résumé : Modern linguistic theory has been based on the promise of explaining how language acquisition can occur so rapidly with such subtlety, and with both surprising uniformity and diversity across languages. This handbook provides a summary and assessment of how far that promise has been fulfilled, exploring core concepts in acquisition theory, including notions of the initial state, parameters, triggering theory, the role of competition and frequency, and many others, across a variety of syntactic topics that have formed the central domains of investigation and debate. These topics are treated from the unique perspective of central actors in each domain who have helped shape the research agenda. The authors have presented a summary of the data, the theories under discussion, and their own best assessments of where each domain stands. Providing as well the agenda for future work in the field showing both particular needs and general directions that should be pursued in the coming decades. Note de contenu :

Titre : Performance and competence in second language acquisition Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Gillian Brown, Auteur ; Kirsten Malmkjaer, Auteur ; John Williams, Auteur Editeur : Cambridge : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 1996 Importance : (215 p.) Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-55861-7 Note générale : Autre Tirage : 2002 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Modern languages Language acquisition Competence and performance (linguistic). Résumé : This original collection revisits and re-evaluates Chomsky's classic competence/performance distinction from a wide variety of perspectives and areas of expertise. The discussion is placed within a broad framework, taking account of a view of language both as a societal construct and as internal, developing within the mind and/or brain. Renowned experts in the fields of lexis, sociolinguistics, connectionism, Universal Grammar, language testing and interlanguage draw together ideas from the most recent developments in second language learning and psychological theory. Germane to their debate is the question of whether it is helpful, or in principle possible, to draw a distinction between competence and performance in second language learning. The volume will be of interest to teachers, researchers and students of applied linguistics, education and general linguistics.
