Unlikely allies / Duncan Andrew Campbell
Titre : Unlikely allies : Britain, America, and the Victorian origins of the special relationship Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Duncan Andrew Campbell, Auteur Editeur : London : Hambledon Continuum Année de publication : 2007 Importance : (VIII-307 p Présentation : ill., carte, jaquette ill. en coul Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84725-191-6 Note générale : Première édition
Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : United States Foreign relations Great Britain. Résumé : When people speak of the special relationship between the two English-speaking peoples on either side of the Atlantic, they are talking of a phenomenon not much older than Britain's 1904 entente cordial with France. The very term 'English-speaking peoples' most probably has no earlier pedigree than William Gladstone. For much of the nineteenth-century, Britain and the United States were imperial rivals in the scramble for North America, and their often difficult relationship directly reflected that reality.
That these two nations became friends and allies was never a foregone conclusion until surprisingly late in the century and the rapprochement between them only was only cemented by the First World War. At the same time, the fact the United States was a former colony and that they therefore shared a common language meant that communication between the two nations differed to that between Britain and its European rivals - something Otto Von Bismarck called the most important fact of the nineteenth century. Starting with the War of 1812 when the United States and Britain found themselves on opposite sides, continuing through prominent and obscure Britons' and Americans' views of each other, the economic and migrant links between the nations, their difficult diplomatic relationship, their later developing friendship and increasing cultural and economic ties and concluding with the First World War, this work describes and analyses the often turbulent and surprising relationship between Britain and the United States in the nineteenth century.Unlikely allies : Britain, America, and the Victorian origins of the special relationship [texte imprimé] / Duncan Andrew Campbell, Auteur . - [S.l.] : London : Hambledon Continuum, 2007 . - (VIII-307 p : ill., carte, jaquette ill. en coul ; 24 cm.

Présentation : couv. ill. en coul Format : 21 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84277-976-7 Note générale : "Published in association with the International African Institute, Royal African Society and Social Science Research Council"--T.p. verso. Bibliogr. p. 150-152. Index
Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Great Britain Foreign relations Africa Foreign relations administration Politics and government. Résumé : Why has Africa become such an important priority for Britain's foreign policy under New Labour? What interests and values is the UK seeking to uphold by intervening? Why has aid to Africa more than tripled over the past decade? How has the UK's involvement in the War on Terror affected its efforts there?
In Britain in Africa Tom Porteous seeks to answer these and other questions about Britain's role in Africa since 1997. He provides an account of the key players, the policies they constructed in the shadow of the war in Iraq and the future of Britain's engagement with the continent. This book sets out the balance sheet of what Britain has achieved, and where and why it failed in Africa.
A compelling read, whose importance for international politics reaches far beyond Britain or Africa.Britain in Africa [texte imprimé] / Tom Porteous, Auteur . - [S.l.] : London ; New York : Zed Books, 2008 . - (IX-158 p.) : couv. ill. en coul ; 21 cm.

Titre : Decentering America Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jessica C.E. Gienow-Hecht, Auteur Editeur : New York ; Oxford : Berghahn Books Année de publication : 2007 Importance : (XIV-407 p.) Présentation : ill. Format : 23 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84545-499-9 Note générale : Bibliogr. en fin de chapitres. Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : United States Civilization Foreign influences Foreign relations Internationalism Transnationalism Non-governmental organizations Cultural relations Diplomacy -- Social aspects. Résumé : Decentering has fast become a dynamic approach to the study of American cultural and diplomatic history. But what precisely does decentering mean, how does it work, and why has it risen to such prominence? This book addresses the attempt to decenter the United States in the history of culture and international relations both in times when the United States has been assumed to take center place. Rather than presenting more theoretical perspectives, this collection offers a variety of examples of how one can look at the role of culture in international history without assigning the central role to the United States. Topics include cultural violence, inverted Americanization, the role of NGOs, modernity and internationalism, and the culture of diplomacy. Each subsection includes two case studies dedicated to one particular approach which while not dealing with the same geographical topic or time frame illuminate a similar methodological interest. Collectively, these essays pragmatically demonstrate how the study of culture and international history can help us to rethink and reconceptualize US history today.

- [S.l.] : Paris : Ellipses, 2000 . - (160 p.) : cartes, couv. ill. en coul. ; 19 cm.
