Africa and Africans in the making of the Atlantic world, 1400-1880 / John Thornton
Titre : Africa and Africans in the making of the Atlantic world, 1400-1880 Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : John Thornton, Auteur Mention d'édition : 2nd edition Editeur : Cambridge : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 1998 Importance : (XXXVI-340 p.) Présentation : cartes Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-62724-5 Note générale : Autre tirage : 2011. - 9780521627245 Langues : Français (fre) Mots-clés : Slavery Africa Relations Europe America. Résumé : This book explores Africa's involvement in the Atlantic world from the fifteenth century to the eighteenth century. It focuses especially on the causes and consequences of the slave trade, in Africa, in Europe, and in the New World. African institutions, political events, and economic structures shaped Africa's voluntary involvement in the Atlantic arena before 1680. Africa's economic and military strength gave African elites the capacity to determine how trade with Europe developed. Thornton examines the dynamics of colonization which made slaves so necessary to European colonizers, and he explains why African slaves were placed in roles of central significance. Estate structure and demography affected the capacity of slaves to form a self-sustaining society and behave as cultural actors, transferring and transforming African culture in the New World.

Bibliogr. p. 150-152. Index
Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Great Britain Foreign relations Africa Foreign relations administration Politics and government. Résumé : Why has Africa become such an important priority for Britain's foreign policy under New Labour? What interests and values is the UK seeking to uphold by intervening? Why has aid to Africa more than tripled over the past decade? How has the UK's involvement in the War on Terror affected its efforts there?
In Britain in Africa Tom Porteous seeks to answer these and other questions about Britain's role in Africa since 1997. He provides an account of the key players, the policies they constructed in the shadow of the war in Iraq and the future of Britain's engagement with the continent. This book sets out the balance sheet of what Britain has achieved, and where and why it failed in Africa.
A compelling read, whose importance for international politics reaches far beyond Britain or Africa.Britain in Africa [texte imprimé] / Tom Porteous, Auteur . - [S.l.] : London ; New York : Zed Books, 2008 . - (IX-158 p.) : couv. ill. en coul ; 21 cm.

Index Langues : Français (fre) Langues originales : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Natural resources Political aspects Africa Conflict management. Résumé : Conflict over natural resources has made Africa the focus of international attention, particularly during the last decade. From oil in Nigeria and diamonds in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to land in Zimbabwe and water in theHorn of Africa, the politics surrounding ownership, management, and control of natural resources has disrupted communities and increased external intervention in these countries. Such conflict has the potential to impact natural resource supply globally, with both local and wide-reaching consequences. The United States, for example, estimates that a quarter of its oil supply will come from Africa by 2015.
Natural Resources and Conflict in Africa is the first book to offer a detailed look at conflict over various natural resources in several African countries. Abiodun Alao undertakes this broad survey by categorizing natural resources into four groups: land [including agricultural practices and animal stock], solid minerals, oil, and water. Themes linking these resources to governance and conflict are then identified and examined with numerous examples drawn from specific African countries. Alao's approach offers considered conclusions based on comparative discussions and analysis, thus providing the first comprehensive account of the linkage between natural resources and political and social conflict in Africa.Natural resources and conflict in Africa : the tragedy of endowment [texte imprimé] / Abiodun Alao, Auteur . - [S.l.] : Rochester : Rochester University Press, 2007 . - (XIX-353 p.) : carte ; 24 cm.
