Résumé : This volume investigates the linguistic development of children with regard to their knowledge of the verb and its grammar. The selection of papers brings to researchers and in particular psycholinguists empirical evidence from a wide variety of languages from Hebrew, through English to Estonian. The authors interpret their findings with a focus on cross-linguistic similarities and differences, without subscribing to either a UG-based or usage-based approach. Note de contenu :

Résumé : Why do speakers of all languages use different grammatical structures under different communicative circumstances to express the same idea? Professor Lambrecht explores the relationship between the structure of the sentence and the linguistic and extra-linguistic context in which it is used. His analysis is based on the observation that the structure of a sentence reflects a speaker's assumption about the hearer's state of knowledge and consciousness at the time of the utterance. This relationship between speaker assumptions and formal sentence structure is governed by rules and conventions of grammar, in a component called 'information structure'. Four independent but interrelated categories are analysed: presupposition and assertion, identifiability and activation, topic, and focus. Note de contenu :

Résumé : This book examines the interactions between the morphosyntax and the semantic interpretation of tense and aspectual forms in the Germanic and Romance languages. These languages diverge not only in their variety of tense and aspectual forms, but also in the distribution and interpretation of given forms. Adopting Noam Chomsky's minimalist framework, AG and FP attempt to provide theoretical explanations for the observed patterns of form and meaning which link the morphosyntactic properties of languages in both universal and language-particular constraints on interpretation. Présentation : couv.ill.en coul. Format : 23 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-57586-282-8 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Grammar, comparative and general Morphosyntaxe Linguistic change Syntax. Résumé : Historical linguistics concerns itself with how the modern languages we speak today came to be the way they are. The book presents, for the first time, a collection of work done in historical linguistics from the perspective of Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG), a lexical unification-based theory. The problems tackled are representative of the field of historical linguistics in general however, this volumes stands apart through the number and type of languages surveyed. In addition to presenting new approaches to data from much studied languages like Italian and English, the book introduces issues in the diachronic development of less well studied languages, including Pennsylvania Dutch, the South Asian language Urdu/Hindi, and the Australian languages Warlpiri and Warumungu.
The papers in this collection use LFG to examine morphosyntactic diachronic developments in a variety of typologically diverse languages. This perspective allows for a fresh look at phenomena which have been the subject of much attention within historical linguistics: the development or shift of case marking systems, the rise of auxiliaries, the origins of complex predication involving verb particles or light verbs, and the formation of complementizers.Note de contenu :
