Politeness / Penelope Brown
Titre : Politeness : some universals in language usage Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Penelope Brown ; Stephen C. Levinson Editeur : Cambridge [Cambridgeshire] : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 1987 Collection : Studies in interactional sociolinguistics num. 4 Importance : 345 p. Format : 23 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-31355-1 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé :
This study is about the principles for constructing polite speeches. The core of it first appeared in Questions and Politeness, edited by Esther N. Goody (now out of print). It is here reissued with a fresh introduction that surveys the considerable literature in linguistics, psychology and the social sciences that the original extended essay stimulated, and suggests distinct directions for research. The authors describe and account for some remarkable parallelisms in the linguistic construction of utterances with which people express themselves in different languages and cultures. A motive for these parallels is isolated and a universal model is constructed outlining the abstract principles underlying polite usages. This is based on the detailed study of three unrelated languages and cultures: the Tamil of South India, the Tzeltal spoken by Mayan Indians in Chiapas, Mexico, and the English of the USA and England. This volume will be of special interest to students in linguistic pragmatics, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, anthropology, and the sociology and social psychology of interaction.

Titre : Rethinking linguistic relativity Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : John J. Gumperz ; Stephen C. Levinson Editeur : Cambridge : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 1996 Importance : viii, 488 p. Présentation : ill., maps Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-44890-1 Résumé : Linguistic relativity is the claim that culture, through language, affects the way in which we think, and especially our classification of the experienced world. This book reexamines ideas about linguistic relativity in the light of new evidence and changes in theoretical climate. Parts I and II address the classical issues in the relation between thought and language, and the extent of linguistic and cultural universals. Parts III and IV show how changes in our understanding of meaning require that we look at how context enters into interpretation, and how context is constituted in social interaction. The editors have provided a substantial introduction which examines changes in thinking about the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis in the light of developments in anthropology, linguistics, and cognitive science; and also introductions to each section which will be of especial use to students.
