This uniquely comprehensive textbook on the subject covers all the basic concepts, and helps students relate their laboratory experiments to lecture-theatre theory.
The subject of mechanical behavior has been in the front line of basic studies in engineering curricula. This text book was written for engineering students with the aim of presenting the basic concepts of mechanical behavior in solid materials in a relatively simple manner. A second aim of the book is to guide students in their laboratory experiments by helping them to understand their observations in parallel with the lectures of the course taught; therefore the first chapter of the book is devoted to mechanical testing. Another aim of the book is to provide practicing engineers with basic help to bridge the gap of time that has passed from their graduation up to their actual involvement in engineering work. The book also serves as the basis for more advanced studies and seminars when pursuing courses on a graduate level.
The content of this text book and the topics discussed correspond to courses that are usually taught in universities and colleges all over the world, but with a different and more modern approach. It is, however, unique by the inclusion of an extensive chapter on mechanical behavior in the micron and submicron/nanometer range which is not provided by traditional textbooks. Mechanical deformation phenomena are explained and often related to the presence of dislocations in the structure. Some important mathematical expression are derived not only stated as in traditional textbooks Many practical illustrations are provided representing various observations encountered in actual structures of technical importance. A comprehensive list of references at each chapter is included to provide a broad basis for further studying the subject.Note de contenu : index Mechanical properties of materials [texte imprimé] / Joshua Pelleg . - New York : Springer, 2012 . - p. cm. - (Solide mechanics and Its applications) .

It covers the basic principles of nonlinear vibrations that occur in flexible and/or adaptive structures, with an emphasis on engineering analysis and relevant control techniques.
Understanding nonlinear vibrations is becoming increasingly important in a range of engineering applications, particularly in the design of flexible structures such as aircraft, satellites, bridges, and sports stadia. There is an increasing trend towards lighter structures, with increased slenderness, often made of new composite materials and requiring some form of deployment and/or active vibration control. There are also applications in the areas of robotics, mechatronics, micro electrical mechanical systems, non-destructive testing and related disciplines such as structural health monitoring. Two broader themes cut across these application areas: (i) vibration suppression – or active damping – and, (ii) adaptive structures and machines.
In this expanded 2nd edition, revisions include:
An additional section on passive vibration control, including nonlinear vibration mounts.
A more in-depth description of semi-active control, including switching and continuous schemes for dampers and other semi-active systems.
A complet
e reworking of normal form analysis, which now includes new material on internal resonance, bifurcation of backbone curves and stability analysis of forced responses.
Further analysis of the nonlinear dynamics of cables including internal resonance leading to whirling.
Additional material on the vibration of systems with impact friction.
The book is accessible to practitioners in the areas of application, as well as students and researchers working on related topics. In particular, the aim is to introduce the key concepts of nonlinear vibration to readers who have an understanding of linear vibration and/or linear control, but no specialist knowledge in nonlinear dynamics or nonlinear control.Note de contenu : index Nonlinear Vibration with Control : For Flexible and Adaptive Structures [texte imprimé] / David Wagg, Auteur ; Simon Neild, Auteur . - New York : Springer, 2015 . - xi-453 p. : ill.coll.
