Current methods of extracting hydrocarbon reserves from sedimentary strata are notoriously inefficient in terms of the percentage of oil which can be brought to the surface. For this reason, there is considerable interest at present in methods of improving the yield. Of the methods so far studied, the use of polymers (via polymer flooding) has the greatest potential. This book looks carefully at all aspects of this method, from the types of polymers used, their structures and their rheological and hydraulic properties, to mechanisms by which oil can be displaced and driven to the surface by polymer flooding.
