Résumé : |
This book examines how affect, the experience of feeling or emotion, has developed as a critical concept in literary studies at different periods and across a range of approaches. Spanning from classical to contemporary, the first section of the book, 'Origins', considers the importance of particular areas of philosophy, theory and criticism that have been important in conceptualising affect and its relationship to literature, including ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, eighteenth-century aesthetics, Marxist theory, psychoanalysis, queer theory and postcolonial theory. The chapters in the second section, 'Developments', correspond to those in the previous section and build on their insights through readings of particular texts. The final section -Applications- focuses on contemporary and future avenues of research and is structured around a particular set of concerns: media and communication, capitalism and an environment of affective relations that extend to ecology, civil crisis and war. |
