The metaphysics / Aristotle
Titre : The metaphysics Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Aristotle, Auteur Editeur : London : Penguin Books Année de publication : 1998 Importance : 459 p. Format : 20 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-14-044619-7 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Aristotle Philosophy Metaphysics Religion. Résumé : When Aristotle articulated the central question of the group of writings we know as his Metaphysics, he said it was a question that would never cease to raise itself. He was right. He also regarded his own contributions to the handling of that question as belonging to the final phase of responding to it. I think he was right about that too. The Metaphysics is one of the most helpful books there is for contending with a question the asking of which is one of the things that makes us human. In our time that question is for the most part hidden behind a wall of sophistry, and the book that could lead us to rediscover it is even more thoroughly hidden behind a maze of misunderstandings. The metaphysics [texte imprimé] / Aristotle, Auteur . - [S.l.] : London : Penguin Books, 1998 . - 459 p. ; 20 cm.

Résumé : Previously published as Ethics, Aristotle's The Nicomachean Ethics addresses the question of how to live well and originates the concept of cultivating a virtuous character as the basis of his ethical system. Here Aristotle sets out to examine the nature of happiness, and argues that happiness consists in 'activity of the soul in accordance with virtue', including moral virtues, such as courage, generosity and justice, and intellectual virtues, such as knowledge, wisdom and insight. The Ethics also discusses the nature of practical reasoning, the value and the objects of pleasure, the different forms of friendship, and the relationship between individual virtue, society and the State. Aristotle's work has had a profound and lasting influence on all subsequent Western thought about ethical matters. Note de contenu :

Titre : The politics Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Aristotle, Auteur ; Trevor J. Saunders, Collaborateur ; T. A. Sinclair, Traducteur Editeur : London : Penguin Books Année de publication : 1992 Collection : Penguin classics Importance : 508 p. Format : 20 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-14-044421-6 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Aristotle Philosophy Politics Systems and governments Greek city-states. Résumé : In The Politics Aristotle addresses the questions that lie at the heart of political science. How should society be ordered to ensure the happiness of the individual? Which forms of government are best and how should they be maintained? By analysing a range of city constitutions " oligarchies, democracies and tyrannies " he seeks to establish the strengths and weaknesses of each system to decide which are the most effective, in theory and in practice. A hugely significant work, which has influenced thinkers as diverse as Aquinas and Machiavelli, The Politics remains an outstanding commentary on fundamental political issues and concerns, and provides fascinating insights into the workings and attitudes of the Greek city-state.
