Investigations in universal grammar / Stephen Crain
Titre : Investigations in universal grammar : a guide to experiments on the acquisition of syntax and semantics Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Stephen Crain, Auteur ; Rosalind Thornton, Auteur Editeur : Lodon : The MIT Press ,cambridge, massachusetts Année de publication : 1998 Collection : Language, speech, and communication Importance : 342 p. Présentation : couv. ill. en coul. Format : 26*18 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-262-03250-6 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : The modularity matching model constraints and universal grammar the poverty of the stimulus models of language development the elicited production task elicited production eliciting relative clauses Résumé : This introductory guide to language acquisition research is presented within the framework of Universal Grammar, a theory of the human faculty for language. The authors focus on two experimental techniques for assessing children's linguistic competence: the Elicited Production task, a production task, and the Truth Value Judgment task, a comprehension task. Their methodologies are designed to overcome the numerous obstacles to empirical investigation of children's language competence. They produce research results that are more reproducible and less likely to be dismissed as an artifact of improper experimental procedure.
In the first section of the book, the authors examine the fundamental assumptions that guide research in this area; they present both a theory of linguistic competence and a model of language processing. In the following two sections, they discuss in detail their two experimental techniques.Investigations in universal grammar : a guide to experiments on the acquisition of syntax and semantics [texte imprimé] / Stephen Crain, Auteur ; Rosalind Thornton, Auteur . - [S.l.] : Lodon : The MIT Press ,cambridge, massachusetts, 1998 . - 342 p. : couv. ill. en coul. ; 26*18 cm.. - (Language, speech, and communication) .

This self-contained introduction to natural language semantics addresses the major theoretical questions in the field. The authors introduce the systematic study of linguistic meaning through a sequence of formal tools and their linguistic applications. Starting with propositional connectives and truth conditions, the book moves to quantification and binding, intensionality and tense, and so on. To set their approach in a broader perspective, the authors also explore the interaction of meaning with context and use (the semantics-pragmatics interface) and address some of the foundational questions, especially in connection with cognition in general. They also introduce a few of the most accessible and interesting ideas from recent research to give the reader a bit of the flavor of current work in semantics. The organization of this new edition is modular; after the introductory chapters, the remaining material can be covered in flexible order. The book presupposes no background in formal logic (an appendix introduces the basic notions of set theory) and only a minimal acquaintance with linguistics. This edition includes a substantial amount of completely new material and has been not only updated but redesigned throughout to enhance its user-friendliness.Meaning and grammar : an introduction to semantics [texte imprimé] / Gennaro Chierchia ; Sally McConnell-Ginet . - 2nd ed. . - [S.l.] : Lodon : The MIT Press ,cambridge, massachusetts, 2000 . - 573 p. : couv. ill. en coul. ; 25*17 cm.
