Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an American novelist and short story writer who explored the themes of sin, guilt, and redemption in his works. He was born in Salem, Massachusetts, into a family with a history of involvement in the Salem witch trials. He graduated from Bowdoin College and married Sophia Peabody, with whom he lived in Concord and traveled to Europe. He is best known for his novels The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables, and his short story collections Twice-Told Tales and Mosses from an Old Manse.
