(XII-298 p.) Présentation : couv. ill. en coul. Format : 22 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 0-86543-535-9 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Language, African, Literature ,.. Résumé : African Literature written in English is not only a literature of great variety and power - it is also a literature of world importance, entitled to the most detailed and advanced linguistic and stylistic analysis. The essays gathered together in this book meet the demand by scrutinizing the language structures and narrative conventions used by some of the most prominent authors on the continent including Camara Laye (Guinea), Wole Soyinka (Nigeria), R. Mugo Gatheru (kenya), Ezekiel Mphalele and Peter Abrahams (South Africa), Chinua Achebe, James P. Clark, D.O. Fagunwa, and Amos Tutuola (West Africa); and Okot P'Bitek and Taban lo Liyong (East Africa). In this unprecedented anthology, some of the most prolific and widely-read African novelists are analyzed - by some of the most advanced African linguists - from two divergent but mutually illuminating perspectives: a sophisticated linguistic and cultural analysis of their works as world-class literary products; and a "cross-cultural " analysis of the rich influence of one (or more) of the over 3,000 indigenous African languages on the English-language writing style of these African authors. This collection of articles, all of which were originally published in "Language and Style: An International Journal", is a major contribution to the study of "anglophone" African literature --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. Titre : The language of postcolonial literatures : an introduction / Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Ismail S. Talib Editeur : London : Routledge Année de publication : 2002 Importance : vii, 182 p. Format : 23 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-415-24019-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 820.9 Résumé : This book provides a comprehensive introduction to some of the central features of language in a wide variety of postcolonial texts.
The Language of Postcolonial Literatures draws on a range of writers, from Jean Rhys and Derek Walcott to Chinua Achebe, Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Nuruddin Farah and Salman Rushdie, to show how English has been shaped by and had to contend with other languages in former British colonies. Exploring literatures from a range of countries including India, Nigeria, Canada, Australia, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Caribbean, Talib shows how individuals retain cultural and national identity in the face of such changes. The book further demonstrates that language is one of the central concerns of postcolonial literatures.
The Language of Postcolonial Literatures is invaluable for anyone with an interest in the evolution and development of English and its use in contemporary world literatures. The language of postcolonial literatures : an introduction / [texte imprimé] / Ismail S. James Dawes proceeds by developing two primary questions: How does the strategic violence of war affect literary, legal, and philosophical representations? And, in turn, how do such representations affect the reception and initiation of violence itself? Authors and texts of central importance in this study range from Louisa May Alcott and William James to William Faulkner, the Geneva Conventions, and contemporary American organizational sociology and language theory. The consensus approach in literary studies since the 1980s has been to treat language as an extension of violence. The idea that there might be an inverse relation between language and violence, says Dawes, has all too rarely influenced the dominant voices in literary studies today. the language of war : literature and culture in the US from the Civil War through World War II [texte imprimé] / James Dawes (1969-....), Auteur . - Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press, 2005 . - 1 vol. Titre : The literary mind Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Mark Turner Editeur : New York : Oxford University Press Année de publication : 1996 Importance : viii, 187 p. Format : 25 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-510411-0 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 801/. Résumé : We usually consider literary thinking to be peripheral and dispensable, an activity for specialists: poets, prophets, lunatics, and babysitters. Certainly we do not think it is the basis of the mind. We think of stories and parables from Aesop's Fables or The Thousand and One Nights, for example, as exotic tales set in strange lands, with spectacular images, talking animals, and fantastic plots--wonderful entertainments, often insightful, but well removed from logic and science, and entirely foreign to the world of everyday thought. But Mark Turner argues that this common wisdom is wrong. The literary mind--the mind of stories and parables--is not peripheral but basic to thought. Story is the central principle of our experience and knowledge. Parable--the projection of story to give meaning to new encounters--is the indispensable tool of everyday reason. Literary thought makes everyday thought possible. This book makes the revolutionary claim that the basic issue for cognitive science is the nature of literary thinking. In The Literary Mind, Turner ranges from the tools of modern linguistics, to the recent work of neuroscientists such as Antonio Damasio and Gerald Edelman, to literary masterpieces by Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and Proust, as he explains how story and projection--and their powerful combination in parable--are fundamental to everyday thought. In simple and traditional English, he reveals how we use parable to understand space and time, to grasp what it means to be located in space and time, and to conceive of ourselves, other selves, other lives, and other viewpoints. He explains the role of parable in reasoning, in categorizing, and in solving problems. He develops a powerful model of conceptual construction and, in a far-reaching final chapter, extends it to a new conception of the origin of language that contradicts proposals by such thinkers as Noam Chomsky and Steven Pinker. Turner argues that story, projection, and parable precede grammar, that language follows from these mental capacities as a consequence. Language, he concludes, is the child of the literary mind. Offering major revisions to our understanding of thought, conceptual activity, and the origin and nature of language, The Literary Mind presents a unified theory of central problems in cognitive science, linguistics, neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy. It gives new and unexpected answers to classic questions about knowledge, creativity, understanding, reason, and invention. Titre : The literature of labor and the labors of literature : allegory in nineteenth-century American fiction / Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Cindy Weinstein Editeur : Cambridge : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 1995 Importance : xii, 266 p Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 80521054584 Index. décimale : 813.4 Résumé : The Literature of Labor and the Labors of Literature juxtaposes representations of labour in fictional texts and non-fictional texts in order to trace the intersections between aesthetic and economic discourse in nineteenth-century America. Both allegory and the new forms of labour produced a version of personhood that seemed frighteningly flat, a flatness that attacked the substance of the work ethic and, indeed, the very foundations of American individualism. Using this contextualized model of allegory, Weinstein argues that texts by Hawthorne, Melville, Twain and Adams are best understood both as allegories of labour (that is, the allegorical representations of the nature and cost of being a labouring being) and labours of allegory (that is, the visibility of the author's work of representation). Weinstein revolutionizes the notion of allegorical narrative, which is exposed as a literary medium of greater depth and consequence than has previously been implied - a working authorial vehicle for engaged and at times socially turbulent thought. Some years ago I wrote a little story called Mignon's Secret. It was in tended to show the grown-up mind something of the intense bitterness of the sorrows of childhood, sorrows which to us may seem trivial, but which to the child's heart and brain are immeasur able in the depth of their intensity. My public have taken Mignon's Secret to their heart, and apparently mean to keep it there - judging from the steady demand to-day for one edition after an other - and among my most precious possessions is a book of Mr. Ruskin's inscribed by him To the author of Mignon's Secret. Two facts which tell me that my aim was reached and which reward me beyond price or words.

Titre : the merchant of venice Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : William Shakespeare, Auteur Editeur : york press Année de publication : 2005 Importance : 185p Format : 18 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-9953-10-266-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : the theeatrical and cultural background , the plot of the merchant of venice, Résumé : The Merchant of Venice is an intriguing drama of love, greed, and revenge. At its heart, the play contrasts the characters of the maddened and vengeful Shylock, a Venetian moneylender, with the gracious, level-headed Portia, a wealthy young woman besieged by suitors. At the play's climax, Shylock insists on the enforcement of a binding contract that will cost the life of the merchant Antonio — inciting Portia to mount a memorable defense.
In this richly plotted drama, Shylock, whom Shakespeare endowed with all of the depth and vitality of his greatest characters, is not alone in his villainy. In scene after scene, a large cast of ambitious and scheming characters demonstrates that honesty is a quality often strained where matters of love and money are concerned.
The gravity and suspense of the play's central plot, together with its romance, have made The Merchant of Venice a favorite of audiences, and one of the most studied and performed of Shakespeare's plays. It is reprinted here from an authoritative text, complete with explanatory footnotes.the merchant of venice [texte imprimé] / William Shakespeare, Auteur . - [S.l.] : york press, 2005 . - 185p ; 18 cm.

Titre : The modern British novel Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Malcolm Bradbury Editeur : London : Penguin Books Année de publication : 1994 Importance : 515 p. Format : 20 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-14-023098-7 Résumé : Bradbury argues that almost a century since the emergence of Modernism, it is now possible to see the entire period in perspective. It is clear that the first 50 years - from Henry James, Wilde and Stevenson, through James Joyce, Lawrence, Forster, to Huxley, Isherwood and Orwell - have been extensively discussed in print. The years since World War II, though, have not been examined in depth, yet have produced talents such as Graham Greene, Angus Wilson, Beckett, Doris Lessing, Margaret Drabble, Angela Carter, Ian McEwan, Kingsley and Martin Amis, Julian Barnes, Fay Weldon, Salman Rushdie and Timothy Mo. The author's concern to see the radical century of fiction as a developing whole enables him to discuss not only the major names, but to include in his overview writers on the fringe of the critical mainstream, or at the sharp edge of experiment, figures as various as Galsworthy, Firbank, Jean Rhys, Edward Upward, Lawrence Durrell, J.G. Ballard, B.S. Johnson and John le Carre. The modern British novel [texte imprimé] / Malcolm Bradbury . - London : Penguin Books, 1994 . - 515 p. ; 20 cm.

Nominated for Grammy, this recording of The Old Man and Sea is perfect example of Hemingway's precision and is read here in its entirety by Oscar-winning actor Charlton Heston.
A novella, The Old Man and Sea tells the story of an old fisherman, Santiago, and his long lusty struggle isn't so much over one fish, but the act of living--living fully, actively, robustly. Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-582-32730-6 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 811.5 Résumé : Despite being widely studied on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses the writing of Sylvia Plath has been relatively neglected in relation to the attention given to her life and what drove her to suicide. Tracy Brain aims to remedy this by introducing completely new approaches to Plath's writing, taking the studies away from the familiar concentration to reveal that Plath as a writer was concerned with a much wider range of important cultural and political topics. Unlike most of the existing literary criticism it shifts the focus away from biographical readings and encompasses the full range of Plath's poetry, prose, journals and letters using a variety of critical methods. Titre : The Oxford guide to literature in English translation Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Peter France Editeur : Oxford : Oxford University Press Année de publication : 2000 Importance : xxii, 656 p. Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 0-19-818359-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Encyclopédies et dictionnaires de la littérature, SF et policier Index. décimale : 820.9 Résumé : Translation has been a crucial process in world culture over the past two millennia and more. In the English-speaking cultures many of the most important texts are translations, from Homer to Beckett, the Bible to Freud. Although recent years have seen a boom in translation studies, there has been no comprehensive yet convenient guide to this essential element of literature in English. Written by eminent scholars from many countries, the Oxford Guide to Literature in English Translation meets this need and will be essential reading for all students of English and comparative literature. It highlights the place of translation in our culture, encouraging awareness of the issues raised, making the translator more 'visible'. Concentrating on major writers and works, it covers translations out of many languages, from Greek to Korean, from Swahili to Russian. For some works (e.g. Virgil's Aeneid) which have been much translated, the discussion is historical and critical, showing how translation has evolved over the centuries and bringing out the differences between versions. Elsewhere, with less familiar literatures, the Guide examines the extent to which translation has done justice to the range of work available. The Guide is divided into two parts. Part I contains substantial essays on theoretical questions, a pioneering outline of the history of translation into English, and discussions of the problems raised by specific types of text (e.g. poetry, oral literature). The second, much longer, part consists of entries grouped by language of origin; some are devoted to individual texts (e.g. the Thousand and One Nights) or writers (e.g. Ibsen, Proust), but the majority offer a critical overview of a genre (e.g. Chinese poetry, Spanish Golden Age drama) or of a national literature (e.g. Hungarian, Scottish Gaelic). There is a selective bibliography for each entry and an index of authors and translators.
